Just a little time

So two years is a completely normal time between blog posts... right?!  What can I say, I've gotten distracted. The baby we were getting ready for in the last post is now TWO! How did that happen?  No really, I think I blinked and I swear he was two. Time needs to slow down a bit. I know it's cliche' but it's true damn it. I want my baby to stay a baby. I suppose this whole toddler thing is pretty cute though too.  Hearing "ove yu mommy" pretty much makes all the bad things go away.

So what have I been up to...

Well, recently we picked up this little family and moved back to the land of 10,000 lakes. I can't wait to spend summers on the water again. Now the winters... yea... I'm going to be hibernating in the house will all the big fluffy quilts. Like this one...

Nathan wanted the little man to have a nice colorful quilt. I think I succeeded.

Well little man is screaming "um on mommy!" Looks like I have to build the 500th Lego tower of the day.  We'll catch up more soon. I promise...

Oh baby!

I did it.  I finally did it!  I made a baby blanket for ME.  Well, technically it's for little man but you know what I mean.  After making lots of baby blankets and other gifts for the little ones of family and friends I am finally making those cute little things for me! The hubs and I (okay, mainly the hubs) put little man's crib together the other weekend.
Did I mention I had to give up my sewing room for the nursery?!?  I've been booted to a corner in the spare bedroom.  I guess it's better then getting booted to the basements with all the spiders though.  Plus, the room does look better as a nursery.

Anyway, back to the making of cute little things.  I was able to put one of the final touches on the crib by adding what should have been a quick and easy blanket to it.  Who knew that sewing minky onto flannel could cause a small headache.  And who knew that apparently I don't drive one speed on my sewing machine!?  The cute stitch I was planning on using turned out to look like poo because I couldn't keep the spacing right.  So I had to break out my good old friend the seam ripper.  I had to rip out an entire side of the blanket!  So much ripping that this happened..........
WHOOPS!!

It took me a little over four hours to get it all out.  After that I decided a nice simple straight line for the edge would do just fine.
The finished product!  I think mommy and daddy are both going to like this blanket as much as little man.  It has the hub's favorite blue and white bicycle flannel on one side and my much loved grey chevron minky on the other.

Another member of our family

Just prior to us finding out we were going to have a baby we added another member to our family.  The hubs got a new dog for Christmas.  Me, I got scissors!  Long story... I'll tell you some other time.

Meet Loki

She's a black lab mix we got from Rocky Mountain Lab Rescue.  So far she has been a pretty great addition to our family.  She has SO. MUCH. ENERGY!  We got her on New Years Eve and they told us she was around a year old.  However, she still acts like a puppy.  Especially when she does things like eat my shoes, the door mat, a lint roller.......

But when she is this cute who can complain?!
But if you do happen to know any good dog trainers out there please let me know!

Little Man

So here's the scoop on the little man.  The hubs and I found out early this year we were expecting a baby!  Everyone always asks how you feel when you are pregnant and I tend to be pretty honest with them.  This whole pregnancy thing is not quiet what I thought it would be like.  There have been a few bumps, some crater size along the way.  Right around 12 weeks I had something called a subchorionic hemorrhage, aka I had a lot of bleeding.  I was told after going two weeks I would be in the clear, but that was not the case.  Three weeks came and went and then bam, another bleed.   I ended up having 5 different episodes of bleeding all together.   I was on pins and needs for the entire second trimester!  There were many late nights of looking at many different blogs reading about other women going through the same thing as me.  It is agonizing!  Thankfully little man stayed healthy through all of it and the bleed has now been reabsorbed by my body.  Reading all of the stories of those women and finding out their babies turned out just fine was what got me through I think.  Now I just have to make it through these last few weeks.  Everything is almost ready for him.  In fact, I just dropped off little man's quilt to be quilted today.  My quilter promised me she would put my quilt next one to go on the machine.  I can't wait to see it finished!  Hopefully I'm not sewing the binding on in the delivery room.

I broke the first rule in quilting!

I started quilting when I was in high school.  At that time my teacher told us the first rule in quilting is not to make a quilt for the man in our life.  I'm sure she had seen even high school romances start at stop before the irons even cooled so it makes sense.  However, after 5... (okay 10!)  years of following her rule I decided it was time to break it.

Here is the first quilt I had for the hubs!

The pattern is Spaghetti Junction.  I had a little bit of a hard time lining up the sashing.  Being a very type A person this made it difficult for me to want to finish once I realized that it wouldn't be perfect.  I'm glad I did though, because like everyone always says you can't tell from far away and I am probably the only one who notices.   It looks pretty darn good to me now.

I absolutely LOVE the quilting on this one!!  Fits him very well.
PS... remind me to put a long arm machine on my Christmas list this year!  And maybe a studio to fit it in.....

This is not the backing I was originally planning on using.  I brought this home to make some projects for little man (oh yeah, I've been such a bad blogger I haven't even shared that we are expecting a baby boy in October!!!  More to come on him later.)  The hubs kept asking what I was planning on making him out of it.  When I told him nothing he got a little upset and started to do pout.  So it was back to Joann's I went (3 different stores PS) to find enough to make it the backing.  I'm glad I did though.  It's very soft and will make a great couch quilt to cuddle under.  That is when it stops being 90 degrees out!!

Time with Family

This year the hubs and I were lucky enough to have a few members from each of our families come out and join us at our home for Thanksgiving.  Nate's parents, both his brothers, his sister (who is currently living with us) as well as my parents, my niece and even my grandma Joyce were all out in gorgeous Colorado for a few days.  We had a great time stuffing our faces, playing games, going hiking and spending time with each other.

One of the best things I think we did was take my grandma out to a ranch that her and my grandpa lived at in Elizabeth, CO.  I'm not sure why but just being there and thinking about how my Grandpa was there years ago was really touching.... so glad we went.

I also enjoyed the night we were able to go bowling with both families.  Everyone really seemed to enjoy themselves.  Sadly, my family lost.  It just so happened to be Nate's brother's 21st birthday.  And of course we have to celebrate!

Giving Thanks

This year I find myself with a lot to be thankful for.

  • I am thankful for my loving husband who is my best friend.
  • I am thankful for our house which we have turned into our home.
  • I am thankful for my family who are always there for me and support me so much.
  • I am thankful for my job, although it has it's moments of being stressful and can upset me at times, I am thankful for what it gives to me.
  • I am thankful for my good health and the good health of my family.
  • I am thankful for my patients that can brighten my day and can teach me more than I can teach them.
  • I am thankful for my friends who I can turn to at any time.
  • I am thankful for the food on my table, although I wish it wouldn't go straight to my butt.
  • I am thankful for everything I have.
